The best Gadgets under $15: Affordable and Practical Picks for 2024

A good mouse is one of my best investments. Having a reliable mouse is crucial for my productivity and precision, whether I’m working, gaming, or browsing the web. A good mouse ensures smooth navigation and comfortable usage, enhancing my overall computing experience. I’ve found that anything from Logitech works just fine for casual users, but gamers might want to consider options from Razer or Asus for an enhanced gaming experience. Keep in mind though that high-end mouse like gaming models won’t fit the $15 price cut. 

Alright, here’s what to consider when buying a mouse:

• DPI (Dots Per Inch): Higher DPI provides greater sensitivity and precision.
• Wired vs. Wireless: Wired mice offer a stable connection, while wireless mice provide freedom of movement.
• Ergonomics: Choose a mouse that fits comfortably in your hand, especially for prolonged use.
• Additional Buttons: Some mice come with extra buttons for customizable shortcuts, ideal for gamers and power users.

If you want your mouse to last a little longer, then you want to consider buying a mouse pad. A good mouse pad provides a smooth surface for accurate mouse movements and enhances the overall usability of your mouse. I switch mouse pads in 6-12-month intervals as they tend to get worn out and dusty. Reputable brands include SteelSeries, Corsair, and Razer. 

When choosing a mouse pad, consider:

Along with a good mouse, another accessory I don’t like to go wrong with is a good keyboard. I work on a Mac Mini which doesn’t come with a keyboard, so I have to get out of my way to choose the right keyboard. If you work on a laptop, then you’re probably happy with your laptop’s built-in keyboard. A comfortable and responsive keyboard is essential for a smooth typing experience and enhanced productivity. If you’re a gamer, you might want a backlit RGB keyboard. Some of the reputable keyboard brands like Logitech, Microsoft, or Corsair. For the $15 budget cut, most of the items are wired keyboards, and therefore Bluetooth or wireless models will not feature here.

A USB flash drive is handy for transferring files and data on the go. I like to keep a USB drive in my Laptop bag at all times. I also have an extra one on my key holder. Sure, you can transfer files between devices via Bluetooth or WiFi through iOS’s Airdrop or Android’s NearbyShare, but nothing beats the speed, security, and convenience of a USB Flash drive. When shopping for a USB Flash drive, look for reputable brands like SanDisk, Kingston, or Samsung to avoid scams or knockoffs, especially on sites like Aliexpress.

Consider the following features when choosing the right USB Flash Drive:

• Storage Capacity: Choose the appropriate capacity for your needs (e.g., 16GB, 32GB, 64GB).

• Compact Design:  Choose a small and durable design is ideal for portability.

MicroSD cards are perfect for expanding the storage of smartphones, cameras, and other devices. I won’t say I am particularly big on microSD cards as a phone’s internal storage which is somewhere around 128GB is usually enough. However, I tend to use microSD cards for my home security cameras to avoid costly monthly subscriptions. Like USB Drives, you shouldn’t gamble with your precious data. You have to take advantage of the cigarette lighter port and a car charger adapter to power your phone. When shopping for a car charger, opt for chargers with multiple USB ports and fast charging capabilities. Reputable brands include Anker, Belkin, and Aukey, but there are also several decent options for less-known brands. Keep in mind that some of these premium brands won’t make it to my under $15 budget.

Charging your smartphone daily is routine, and when it comes to phone cables, they generally fall into three categories: the older micro USB cables, USB-C cables, and Lightning cables for iPhones. Most smartphones released in the last three years feature a USB-C connector, making USB-C cables the go-to choice. These cables are available in two variations: USB-A to USB-C and USB-C to USB-C, with the latter offering faster charging speeds. Lightning cables also come in two versions: USB-A to Lightning and USB-C to Lightning, the latter providing quicker charging when used with a compatible charger. With the release of the iPhone 15, you can use a USB-C cable to charge your iPhone.
